Maple Blues Band

In 2023, streaming is abundant. It has its pros: reach, convenience, cost. But what streaming offers in ease it lacks in intimacy. There is no medium more suited for such than vinyl.

Of the many musical genres the world over, jazz and blues remain among the most intimate. Quality blues records never lose their mystique, aging like wine through every era. Tapes, CDs, and streaming cut into vinyl’s market, but nothing can put it to bed.

That’s part of why Maple Blues Band is so excited about the vinyl version of its latest album, “Let’s Go.” The Toronto outfit’s 10-track project was released in January through Cordova Bay Records. It has since climbed to the No. 1 spot on Roots Music Report’s Canadian Chart while residing on the list for 27-straight weeks. It has earned itself quite the reputation, and lovers of jazz can now enjoy the band’s suave grooves through timeless means; its vinyl unveiling provides listeners with the art in its purest form.

“I’m really encouraged by the growing popularity of the vinyl record,” the band’s musical director and bassist Gary Kendall said. “Although digital recordings have improved over the years, you can’t beat the sound of good vinyl on a first-class stereo system. It’s the correct and proper way to listen to music.”

It’s been a long time coming for the Maple Blues Band and this release. It took a 24-year collaboration, originating at the Toronto Blues Society programming recap meeting following the 1998 Maple Blues Awards. There, Kendall told the audience that the music that accompanied the award presentations should be better. They retorted: “Let’s see what you can do.” So, Kendall did.

“Twenty-four years ago, the ball was in my hands, and I knew I had to make it good, really good,” he explained.

He also knew he needed to find a collection of musical creators capable of contortion.

“I wanted a big band that could play all the blues styles: Delta Blues, Southside Chicago Blues, New Orleans Funk, Uptown Blues, Zydeco, Blues Rock, and most of all Canadian Blues,” Kendall recalled.

What Kendall made turned into something unique itself. Infusing styles from across the Canadian Blues scene and borrowing pieces from the genre’s many niches, Maple Blues Band has a one-of-a-kind sound born from the beauty of organic collaboration.

The Maple Blues Band has been a staple of the Maple Blues Awards ever since, and more than two decades have brought it to this point. Song writing credits on the album include band members past and present. What started as a way to improve a local event has turned into something much more.

For Kendall in particular, it’s been an arduous but rewarding path.

“Over the years, the musicians that have contributed to making this dream possible all rose to the occasion lending their talent and support,” Kendall said. “The Maple Blues Band made a really great album with ‘Let’s Go.’ Being able to listen to it with that warm, fat vinyl sound has made my artistic journey complete.”

Lipstereo

'Little Spaceships’ is the second single from Australian indie rockers, LIPSTEREO’s new EP, 'Modern Mythology'. Renowned Australian, Mark Opitz AM (INXS, AC/DC, The Angels), produced this melodic antidote to their garage rock debut, ’Stop.’

‘Little Spaceships’ is uplifting indie rock with guitars, bass and drums channelling The Beatles, Nirvana and The Ramones. Interesting arrangements and studio sounds such as bells and a 1960s electro-mechanical musical instrument, the Mellotron (used in 'Strawberry Fields Forever’ by The Beatles), fuse Opitz's "sophisto-punk" musical vision to the band's post punk revival sound.

This song hints at the future musical direction of LIPSTEREO as it leads the listener into areas of some great song writing. ‘Little Spaceships’ sees the band proudly wearing on their sleeve the influences of their contemporaries and heroes such as Arctic Monkeys, Weezer and The Strokes.

The song is about “friends moving on and feeling left behind" says lead singer/guitarist, Sam Stranges. The song travels through some great pop rock terrain with a vocal treatment akin to Marc Bolan and T-Rex thanks to the skills of producer Mark Opitz and Thirty Mill Studios sound engineer, Colin Wynne. It is truly thrilling to hear this kind of rock ’n’ roll being made today… in Melbourne; a city with a rich musical history that gave us Nick Cave, King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard, Crowded House, The Teskey Brothers and Jet.

The music video was recently filmed during a live sold-out show in Melbourne at The Catfish. The footage shows the band in fine form and as an exciting, bona fide live act. The audience reactions to their mesmerising live performances have been electric. Do not miss...

THE RISE AND RISE OF LIPSTEREO ...

LIPSTEREO’s success can be attributed to its strong two-year creative period where they wrote and demoed some fifty songs in one of the most locked-down cities around the world, Melbourne. Since then, the band has gone from strength to strength with their ground-breaking debut music video for ‘Stop’ being played on national ABC television network in Australia for weeks on end as well as MTV in Canada and the US. In addition to MTV in North America, their second music video, ‘Little Spaceships’ has increased their reach into MTV Latin America, MTV SUR and MTV Mexico. Their total reach through MTV alone being over 150 million homes across North and South America.

Their songs have been serviced to over 14,000 radio stations internationally and have received significant airplay in the US, Canada, The Netherlands, Portugal, Denmark, Ireland, the UK and their home country of Australia. They even had a slot on AXS TV reaching over 44 million homes in the US. They have had Top 10 commercial radio (Modern Rock Specialty) and Top 20 college radio success in the US and Canada for ‘Modern Mythology’ and are currently mastering in their second studio EP, also produced by Mark Opitz.

LIPSTEREO has gained international attention with their EP, ‘Modern Mythology’ which was named as “Record Of The Week” in Rolling Stone. Their follow up, “Live At Bakehouse” EP was also named “Record Of The Week” in Rolling Stone…AGAIN!

They have received massive coverage in NMEEarMilkClassic Rock Magazine and Atwood MagazineLIPSTEREO pioneered a new TikTok genre where they do a "Blind Cover," of a trending song without actually listening to it – including ‘Anti-Hero’ by Taylor Swift, ‘Made You Look’ by Meghan Trainor and ‘Life Goes On’ by Oliver Tree. The latter video went viral on TikTok, garnering 5 million views, 800k likes and over 6k comments alone.

Their music videos have also ben added MTVU (covering over 750 college and university campuses across the U.S.), Loop TV, DEC TV, LA-TV, Video Jam, Video Hits and content providers including Promo Only, Clear TV, Gloss Media, Multiplicity and Woven Media. And LIPSTEREO has sold out every single headline performance in their hometown of Melbourne Australia since 2022.

"Islands in the Stream" is a beautiful song created and performed by legends BeeGees, Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers.

In respect to the legends, NuAsia's mission was to modernize the song while still maintaining the original melody front and present. They wanted the song to be recognized from the beginning and making it sound like it was produced yesterday at the same time.

The concept is to fuse elements of explorational and exciting progressive rock bands of the 70s with contemporary stylistic elements and more modern commercial tendencies in order to make a sound which sits comfortably in the modern music context of 2023 whilst still preserving some of the creative ethos of bands such as YES, Camel, Rush and other great bands who have influenced Nicolaas.

"Sun Coming Up on My Life" is about the feeling of having a trajectory of positive change in one's life and being grateful for it.

James Leeds

Following radio plays from renowned German radio station SWR3, composer, pianist and producer James Leeds returns with a beautiful pop song ‘Whenever or Wherever’ featuring vocals from JACOB. He composed this song for his wife and performed it on their wedding day.

As one blogger wrote "Whenever or Wherever" is 'a gorgeous old-school pop song. It's got an ever-green melody that will never go out of date. The vocals are wonderful as are the harmonies and the overall production, although a mixture of 1970s and 1980s, is extremely effective... Love it!'

Are Union

The start of Rare Union began in 2019. It started with LA Smith from New York, percussionist.

LA Smith had been wanting to produce a CD, with a lot of percussion. To pass percussion on to kids all over the world. After completing a national tour with The Randy Oxford Band in 2014, LA decided to play at festivals with headliners, and do percussion workshops, passing on 12 sets of bongos at each workshop to low-income kids all over the western hemisphere.

At the same time, Martin Cage lead guitarist from Nemesis, was looking to put some of his original compositions into a CD. LA Smith now out of Columbia MO, and Martin Cage out of Salt Lake UT, decided to get together, and see what would happen.

They went into El Centro studio in Columbia, Missouri and start recording. They added Jerry Russo, a local rhythm drummer and the three of them put together first six songs.

Then the pandemic hit, and it was a challenge to bring any artists in to the studio. The studio added UV lighting, and slowly they started to work on the CD. Martin Cage had played with vocalist, guitar player, Max Soler from FT Myers, in the group Nemesis. So, when they called Max he was ready to go. Over the next year and a half, they had several recording sessions. They had Will Reeves on bass and Danny Carrol on drums, both from Columbia, MO. They played together in several groups. Before too long they had 9 more songs.

The songs started to get real heart felt lyrics, guitar breaks and solos that bring out the original sound that Rare Union turned out to be. They did not go into the studio trying to produce a particular sound, just wanted to make good music. What happened was chemistry, with five artists, with all different backgrounds, from 5 different states playing together. As the songs Martin had composed evolved and began to take shape, Max would add lyrics, guitar. Both Martin Cage and Max Soler would switch off on lead and rhythm. LA Smith and Danny Carroll would build the structure of the songs and decide how to incorporate the drums and percussion. Will Reeves did the bass lines and engineered the CD. They ended up with a new blues rock sound.

The addition of Micael Kott on Cello, from Santa Fe NM, was added. His recording was done at Frogville Studios in Santa Fe, NM. Michael Kott plays cello all over the world with Peter Buffet. His cello is on “Won’t Be Lost” and “Brother of Mine”.

With the CD getting produced, and final vocals getting finished the band needed a name. That’s where Dawn Smith suggested Rare Union. It described this band, born in a pandemic, from five states, with all new original music. Dawn set up all the production of the CD, web site, Domain, copywrite and trademarks.

Naming the CD was easy, Max Soler and Martin Cage had a friend who passed, and he was considered a brother. So, the band named the CD, “Brother of Mine”.

Rare union is now setting dates to do three videos and the start of the next CD in March. Wanting to have it out by the middle of October.

They have been invited to several festivals, and are lining up festivals around the world to play. Hopping for 2023, but with the pandemic may be 2024.

"Why" is a song about a communication breakdown leading to the end of a relationship. Despite being a foot-stomping anthem, it’s also a serious track that ponders why some choose to walk away from their problems, rather than learn how to listen.

Misha Fair

Misha Fair, a prolific singer songwriter, has been making a bold impression with her classic country vocals and expressive lyrics. Those who have been fortunate enough to see her dynamic performances are in high expectation of her upcoming solo releases.

A product of a musical family, the singer-songwriter’s family has had major label success from RCA to Atlantic Records. As a result, she spent most of her early childhood development in the same studios as Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, the SOS Band, Isaac Hayes, and many other music legends.

With a rich musical legacy written into her DNA, her childhood was shaped by this reality in remarkable yet complicated ways. While most of her kindergarten classmates were toting My Buddies to Show-n-Tell, her father would join her, off tour, with members of the S.O.S. Band, fully costumed.

Enthralled in the family business, she quickly earned a reputation as the little girl with the big voice, wowing audiences with renditions of LeAnne Rimes’ ‘Blue’ and other tunes by country artists such as Patsy Cline, Dolly Parton, as well as rock singer-songwriters Pat Benatar, and Joan Jett.

She was trained from a young age as a classical vocalist, but found her passion in jazz, hip hop, and the gritty alternative sound of the mid ‘90s. She performed in countless marquee, and children’s choirs in her hometown. Unbeknownst to her, there was a wave of hip-hop and RnB sweeping Atlanta, and the young Misha Fair found her tribe along the confluence of the shared and varied traditions that make up the musical ethos of the United States. Misha Fair attended college on a vocal performance scholarship. Minoring in linguistic studies, she may be one of the few country artists able to sing and write in multiple romance languages.

In 2008, she began an internship at Wondaland Arts Society after a chance meeting with Janelle Monae. Her professional career was kickstarted after she began assisting creatively with many of her early projects.

She has collaborated with artists, songwriters, and producers including the likes of Blanco Brown, Breland, Demun Jones, and Yelawolf.

Jeff Pike

Classic love songs, beautifully arranged, exquisitely crafted, and passionately performed, never go out of style. Time stands still within the emotional impact of the lyrics, be it celebratory or heartbreak, and the soul-moving melody it caresses with the ease of a wave gliding across the ocean. "Keep On Walking" is that kind of song. We are all on our path to finding ourselves and our one true love, and it is often simultaneously a painful and blissful experience. "Keep On Walking" beautifully explores this quandary.

"Keep On Walking" was produced, recorded, and engineered by award-winning and multi-million-selling recording artist, vocalist and songwriter Gino Vannelli. His brother, award-winning songwriter, composer and music producer Ross Vannelli produced and directed the video.

It's the second single from Jeff's upcoming album and video project "Right Where I Am". Both projects were recorded, produced and directed by Gino Vannelli and Ross Vannelli.

The New Winamp Is Here, but It’s Not What You’d Expect

Winamp was a popular music player program in the late 1990s and early 2000s, and recently it’s back under active development. A completely new version of Winamp is now available, but it’s pretty different than the original version.

The parent company for Winamp has been split between two projects for the past few years: updates for the classic Windows player, and a completely new service with the same name. The initial version of the service is now live at player.winamp.com, which works on both desktop and mobile browsers. Full mobile apps for iPhone and Android are expected to arrive in the third quarter of 2023, “based on the legacy desktop version,” according to a press release.

You can’t actually play your own music files with the new web app yet, nor can you connect it to third-party streaming services. Winamp says that functionality is “coming soon,” and it’s not clear which streaming services would allow playback through the service. For now, the only source of music is “Fanzone” — a service where you can support individual artists with direct subscriptions (most seem to be $1 per month) for access to their music in the player. That feature seems to be competing with platforms like Patreon.

The press release explains that the new Winamp “features the Fanzone, which creators can access to become better merchants and to sell their products, creating tiered subscription plans. Winamp fuels the love dedicated fans have for their favourite artists through exclusive content, experiences and memberships, while empowering artists to bypass industry gatekeepers and create on their own terms.”

The concept of a music player that aggregates your own music library, streaming services, and direct access to a given artist’s library could be useful, but right now only the latter component is functional. The existing classic player is also still available and under active development.
