Russ Lorenson

Who says The Great American Songbook stopped being written in 1959? In 2008, many deemed The Great American Songbook extinct. But Russ Lorenson saw it differently. He curated a show of 'new standards', demonstrating that songs with soul and depth were still being crafted.

Fast forward to the present. While initially recorded with the intention of a 2009 release, this album of songs from New York City in 2008 had been shelved. But now, 15 years later, these rediscovered gems validate Lorenson's belief: many have indeed evolved into the new generation's standards.

Every track on this album draws inspiration from composers who themselves have been torchbearers of the classic standards—artists like Michael Feinstein, Harry Connick, Jr., John Pizzarelli, and more. Their modern compositions, echoing with undertones of jazz classics, stand as testament to the living, breathing, evolving nature of the Songbook.

A terrific voice. Charisma to spare. A delightful raconteur. Impeccable musical taste and vocal phrasing. Unassuming nice guy. They all apply to Russ Lorenson, whose burnished tenor has thrilled audiences throughout the US and Europe. Since his breakout club debut in 2005, Russ Lorenson has established a reputation as one of the San Francisco Bay Area’s leading interpreters of jazz standards. As a singer, he is equally at home whether entertaining a concert hall audience or performing in the more intimate cabaret setting. With comparisons to Tony Bennett, Mel Tormé, and Chet Baker, Lorenson has a voice one savors and remembers. It’s no wonder he’s called “San Francisco’s Favorite Crooner.” In recognition of his solid and sophisticated musical vocabulary, Downbeat called him “a showman of taste and discretion.” The Los Angeles Times said that he brings “a supple voice and strong sense of characterization to all his songs.” The San Diego Union-Tribune said that his “relaxed, easy deliveries…seem natural and heartfelt.” The Coronado Journal simply called him “…
irresistible…”

Woody Allen and jazz

Woody Allen is a passionate fan of jazz, he began playing clarinet as a child and took his stage name from clarinetist Woody Herman. He has performed publicly at least since the late 1960s, including with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band on the soundtrack of Sleeper.

Woody Allen and his New Orleans Jazz Band have been playing each Monday evening at the Carlyle Hotel in Manhattan for many yearspecializing in New Orleans jazz from the early 20th century. He plays songs by Sidney Bechet, George Lewis, Johnny Dodds, Jimmie Noone, and Louis Armstrong. The documentary film Wild Man Blues (directed by Barbara Kopple) chronicles a 1996 European tour by Allen and his band, as well as his relationship with Previn. The band released the albums The Bunk Project (1993) and the soundtrack of Wild Man Blues (1997). In 2005, Allen, Eddy Davis and Conal Fowkes released the trio album Woody With Strings. In a 2011 review of a concert by Allen's jazz band, critic Kirk Silsbee of the Los Angeles Times suggested that Allen should be regarded a competent musical hobbyist with a sincere appreciation for early jazz: "Allen's clarinet won't make anyone forget Sidney Bechet, Barney Bigard or Evan Christopher. His piping tone and strings of staccato notes can't approximate melodic or lyrical phrasing. Still his earnestness and the obvious regard he has for traditional jazz counts for something."

Allen and his band played at the Montreal International Jazz Festival on two consecutive nights in June 2008. For many years he wanted to make a film about the origins of jazz in New Orleans. Tentatively titled American Blues, the film would follow the different careers of Louis Armstrong and Sidney Bechet.

TAPE FIVE

TAPE FIVE, the multinational music project has, since 2004, produced 8 albums and many EPs and singles. They generate millions of streams across the usual platforms and have shared the stage with some of the great pop and jazz artists around the world even playing for presidents! Tape Five’s songs are heard in adverts, TV and film and appear on more than a 1000 compilations worldwide.

In 2010 they became renowned as the “pioneers of Electroswing”. TAPE FIVE had already navigated their way through many facettes of vintage/retro music since the foundation in 2003 by master-mind Martin Strathausen (favorite quote: „I did it my way“). For almost a decade TAPE FIVE have thrived on a mixture of beats using the means of modern times, but song structures, stories, atmospheres, arrangements and live musicians are all inspired from days gone by, when enthusiasm for music boomed and musical individualism was paramount.

Russ Lorenson

Skip the Christmas caroling and spend a cozy winter's evening with Russ Lorenson and his holiday album "What I Want for Christmas." From the swingin’ to the romantic, it's pure magic listening to these classics, dusted off and delivered with Lorenson's fresh delivery.

'Christmas records are special keepsakes that come out once a year. The best ones transport me back to my days as a small boy, celebrating the holidays with my family in Pennsylvania', said Lorenson. 'As a singer, I have always wanted to create one of those ‘special keepsakes,’ something I hope will be treasured year after year.'

A terrific voice. Charisma to spare. A delightful raconteur. Impeccable musical taste and vocal phrasing. Unassuming nice guy. Russ Lorenson

Start with one healthy pour of brand-new holiday tunes, add a jigger of lesser-known gems from the Golden Age of Christmas Music, shake them together with a 16-piece big band, garnish with a candy-cane crooner, and you’ve got the perfect recipe for an intoxicating Yuletide cocktail that will get you In the Holiday Spirit!

"In the Holiday Spirit" has been awarded four stars by the editors of Downbeat and was included in the magazine’s prestigious “Best Albums of 2015” list: 'A showman of taste and discretion, Lorenson admires Bobby Darin, Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin without imitating them or adopting a Rat Pack smugness.'

A big band, a swingin' crooner, and holiday tunes you're not already sick of hearing – what else do you need to get In the Holiday Spirit?

A terrific voice. Charisma to spare. A delightful raconteur. Impeccable musical taste and vocal phrasing. Unassuming nice guy. They all apply to Russ Lorenson, whose burnished tenor has thrilled audiences throughout the US and Europe.

Jeff Pike

Classic love songs, beautifully arranged, exquisitely crafted, and passionately performed, never go out of style. Time stands still within the emotional impact of the lyrics, be it celebratory or heartbreak, and the soul-moving melody it caresses with the ease of a wave gliding across the ocean. "Keep On Walking" is that kind of song. We are all on our path to finding ourselves and our one true love, and it is often simultaneously a painful and blissful experience. "Keep On Walking" beautifully explores this quandary.

"Keep On Walking" was produced, recorded, and engineered by award-winning and multi-million-selling recording artist, vocalist and songwriter Gino Vannelli. His brother, award-winning songwriter, composer and music producer Ross Vannelli produced and directed the video.

It's the second single from Jeff's upcoming album and video project "Right Where I Am". Both projects were recorded, produced and directed by Gino Vannelli and Ross Vannelli.

John Barry

John Barry was born on November 3, 1933 in York (England).

He was a trumpet player in a local jazz band: The Modernaires.

In the army he joined a military band and later worked as an arranger.

Together with some friends he founded the band The John Barry Seven in 1955. In 1957 they appeared on the program "Six Five Special". On television they play in shows like "Oh Boy", achieving great notoriety. They sign with EMI and record highly popular singles.

In 1960, John Barry made his first film work: "Beat Girl" and later for "Until Your Last Breath." Internationally recognized for his romantic soundtracks and for his extensive collaboration in the James Bond film series. In 1962, after acquiring the film rights to Ian Fleming's novels, Albert R. Broccoli presented the first film in the series: "Dr. No" and then an entire concept was born where music was a key element. Monty Norman was in charge of the music for this first installment. The show's producers called John Barry because they were apparently dissatisfied with Norman's work and wanted a new version of the theme song. Thus was born the true and unforgettable James Bond Theme, which to date has accompanied the British agent throughout his 18 films and which provoked legal disputes over the rights to the theme between Norman and Barry.

He did work for Bond with "From Russia with Love", and ousted the Beatles with the sale of his song for "Goldfinger". He combines cinema with works for television, such as the "Vendetta" series, documentaries about cities ("Elizabeth Taylor in London", "Sophia Loren in Rome" ...) or "The Persuasors".

He worked on "The Lion in Winter", the musical "Billy", "The Last Valley", "Mary, Queen of Scots" and great soundtracks to diverse genres, such as space ("Black Abyss", "Clash of Galaxies "), even western ("Monte Walsh") or adventure ("King Kong", "Robin and Marian"). "Moonraker" deserves special mention as a return to the Bond series. During the 80s he composed the music for "En Algún Lugar del Tiempo". He says goodbye to the Bond series with the scores for "A View to a Kill", "Octopussy" and "007 High Tension". "Out of Africa" earned him recognition from the Academy. After a long illness, he composed for "Bailando con Lobos", "Mi Vida" and "La Letra Escarlata". In "Chaplin" he does a magnificent job full of sensitivity, and in "The Specialist" he composes like the best Bond music.

Nominated 7 times for the Oscars, he won 5 statuettes: Born Free (1966), for which he won the award in the categories of Best Soundtrack and Best Song; The Lion in Winter (1968); Out of Africa (1985) and Dances with Wolves (1990).

John Barry died in Oyster Bay, New York, on January 30, 2011 of a heart attack.
