Crashing Wayward

Crashing Wayward came together in the Spring of 2020, just when the world seemed to come to a halt. In that stillness, the band grew restless, feverishly writing emotionally fueled songs of hope, inclusion, and escape. The music on their debut album “LISTEN!” represents a cathartic release raw in approach, yet refined in tone. Lyrically poetic and musically illuminating, Crashing Wayward paints a landscape that stretches beyond alternative hard rock and explores the diverse influences of each of its band members, vocalist Peter Summit, guitarists Stacey David Blades and David Harris, bassist Carl Raether, and drummer Shon McKee. The unrestrained passion which fuels the new single “Closer” provides a perfect introduction to what this band is all about. A hit waiting to happen on an album full of potential singles, “Closer” will be released in all digital/streaming formats on May 19th, accompanied by a powerful new music video directed by Mason Wright. The band’s introductory single “Breathe,” released digitally by RFK Media in December 2022, achieved international recognition via Apple Music’s “Breaking Hard Rock” and “New in Rock” playlists, YouTube’s “Heavy Gauge” playlist, and a barrage of media interviews and radio play resulting in #1 status on radio stations in the U.S. and Canada. Crashing Wayward’s live show is powerfully electric and engaging, inviting every audience to journey within a fully immersive experience reminiscent of their most iconic predecessors (comparisons include Soundgarden, Stone Temple Pilots, U2, and Foo Fighters).

Performances in demanding markets such as Nashville, Las Vegas, and Hollywood, headlining as well as opening for national acts, have proven this act is well-prepared for the next level. Respected public relations icon Mitch Schneider declares them “arena-ready,” while radio/TV personality Eddie Trunk says, “I’ve seen them live already and they deliver.” “LISTEN!” by Crashing Wayward was produced by heavy hitter Mike Gillies, whose credits include a long tenure with Metallica as well as studio work with Motley Crue and The Cult. The album will be available worldwide June 9th on CD and all digital/streaming platforms, with the vinyl edition to follow later this summer. The CD packaging is a jewel case with a 12-page booklet including lyrics. “Any time a new artist breaks into fresh territory like this, it tends to defy explanation,” adds RFK Media president Ron Keel. “Terms like modern alternative hard rock certainly apply, but we’re seeing – and hearing – a much bigger picture here. This is one of those rare acts with the potential to make musical history.” Crashing Wayward genuinely pour their soul, blood, sweat, tears, and hearts into song and show. Equally primordial and intellectual, their music embodies the fundamental hypnotic quality of rock music and makes them the band to watch in 2023 and beyond.

Spendo

Crowned “Best In Vancouver 2021” by Live Acts Canada, SPENDO is turning heads with their big hooks, catchy melodies and relentless work ethic. Each member brings a unique, feel-good vibe that takes you back to a familiar and timeless era. Their strength is live performances, as this five-piece powerhouse consistently delivers a tight, engaging and hard-hitting performance that leaves their audiences wanting more. After introducing a new lineup in March 2020, they found themselves in a state of involuntary hibernation (along with the rest of the world). Clearing a busy schedule of shows from their calendar, they instead devoted their time and energy into writing new material and recording with Canadian producer Danny Craig (Default, One Bad Son). This culminated in their seven-track EP The Great Unknown, which they released to positive reception in March 2023. Giving SPENDO the opportunity to sell out headline shows and play festival main stages, rubbing elbows with the likes of Finger Eleven, Big Wreck, Collective Soul, Prism, and 54-40, among others. Fueled by the momentum of the last 5 years, SPENDO has only just begun their journey into The Great Unknown.

Diamonds and Guns

Making Cash For Heartless Crooks is the debut EP from the Swedish punkrockers Diamonds and Guns. I’m always happy to hear new punkrock in English coming out from Swedish bands, it seems like it’s not as common nowadays as it was during the late 90’s-early 00’s. The single So Long, Chicago is also the opening track (not counting the intro) on the EP. It sounds a bit like Hot Water Music mixed with a little Irish-inspired punkrock. I really like the mix of the laid back verse going into the HWM-esque chorus. Nevertheless continues in the same style, and it’s nice to hear that the band doesn’t feel the need to put the pedal to the metal, but instead letting the songs breath in more mid-tempo. I get a little Rancid mixed with Madcap (if anyone remembers them) feeling. September also has that So-Cal laid back punk vibe in the sound. Lyrically it’s really solid as well, not political but rather more towards rock-themes. A story of a Chicago girl having to leave her hometown because of an alcoholic father, reminiscing about meeting that girl during ones teenage years and drunk nights in California. Although the band themselves says that this is a bit happier in the tone than previous releases, it feels like there’s a melancholic theme in those first three songs, and I really like it. The songs definitively got a bit of an nostalgic shimmer as well. It’s all really pleasant to listen to, much thanks to the frontmans voice that has the perfect amount of growl without any sharp edges, also adding to the melancholy and almost a bit of longing. On top of that the rest of the band does a good job of adding the background vocals to fill up the choruses nicely. In the closer the band leans even more toward rock rather than punk, adding a discreet piano to the sound. It also goes away from the overall theme bit, adding a bit more optimistic vibe, and perhaps that’s why it feels a bit off for me. It’s not my favourite track on the EP and it goes a bit long in my opinion. I was about to write that Diamonds and Guns is a breath of fresh air on the scene with Making Cash For Heartless Crooks, bit that isn’t completely true as they’re not inventing the wheel here. But I haven’t heard this sound from a Swedish band in a long time, and it’s a welcome contribution. It’s a nice listen most of the way through and it got that perfect end of summer/beginning of autumn-soundtrack feeling. If they were to make an full-length album I would like to see some variations in tempo and style, but for an EP that’s not much of an issue. I’m gonna be looking out for future stuff from these guys.

Johnny Burgin

Johnny had a bang-up year in ’23, earning a BMA Nomination for Best Traditional Blues Artist and playing 200 dates across the US, Mexico, Japan and Europe.  But if you’d told him this would be his career when he was in High School,  he wouldn’t have belived you.  Johnny grew up in Misssissippi and South Carolina and went to University of Chicago with the intention of becoming a writer.  When a friend took him out to a West Side ghetto club to hear the blues singer Tail Dragger, it was a conversion moment.  The blues came to life for Johnny and he fell headfirst into the vibrant Chicago blues scene.  Choosing the blues clubs over the library, Johnny eagerly absorbed the lessons from the blues masters who practiced their craft nightly.  By persistence and practice, Johnny gained a spot in Tail Dragger, and started gigging and recording with  traditional blues veterans like Sam Lay, Billy Boy Arnold, and Pinetop Perkins.   By the late 90s, Johnny was working regularly in Chicagoland blues clubs under his own name.  Johnny started a Monday night residency at The Smoke Daddy in Wicker Park, featuring vocalist Jimmy Burns.  The band featured other future blues notables who were also at beginning of their careers, such as Kenny Smith on drums and Martin Lang on harp, and they created quite a buzz.  They packed the club every Monday with a younger, hip crowd, as well as blues veterans stopping by to sit in such as Dave Meyers, Jesse Fortune, Barkin’ Bill, etc.  Their success led to a record deal with Delmark and the first of several European tours. The shangri-la of being “King of Division Street” eventually ran its course.  In the early aughts, Johnny dropped off the scene entirely to raise a daughter.   When the music eventually called Johnny back, his comeback was noted by The Chicago Tribune, Chicago Blues Guide, and the Dutch blues magazine BLOCK.  As noted blues producer Dick Shurman wrote, “Johnny’s skills, passion and committment were undiminished.”

His move to the Bay Area in 2016 led to a creative burst and his most notable recordings.  In a few short years, Johnny cranked out the Cali/Chicago blues mashups Greetings from Greaseland,  Neoprene Fedora, the Howlin’ Wolf tribute Howlin’ at Greaseland (nominated for a BMA for Best Traditional Blues Recording) and Johnny Burgin Live, which featured blues legend Charlie Musselwhite and was nominated for a Blues Blast Best Live Recording Award for 2019.   Johnny had always done road work, but during this time, he grew into the role of the constantly touring road warrior he’s known as today. Johnny’s produced eleven CDs as a leader to his credit (including “Ramblin’ from Coast to Coast, street date 03.10.24 on the Danish Straight Shooter label), and dozens more as a sideman.  He’s recorded with veterans like Johnny Sansone,  Paul DeLay, Bob Corritore, and Jimmy Burns as well as up and comers like Aki Kumar, Joel Astley, and Ben Levin.

Johnny’s developed from a young guitar slinger and local blues hero to a matured bluesman, fully fledged singer and the confident and engaging bandleader.  In recent years, he has been a resident instructor at the Pinetop Perkins Foundation and the Chicago Blues Guitar Workshop and has developed a loyal following on YouTube channel for his weekly looks at the blues guitar greats.   Johnny’s recordings have evolved from being very Chicago-centric, to a fusion of West Coast and Chicago styles, and finally,to a more inclusive, international approach.  His latest CD, No Border Blues Japan, is the first American compilation of the underground Japanese blues scene.

Sluka

The second single from the forthcoming album "Cautionary Yell". The song is a reflection of the polarization in the USA and all over the world. We used to just ignore people who would rant and scream nonsense. But now they can become leaders of their countries. We've seen this repeat on and on and on... throughout history. But hey... let's have fun anyway!

Brian Keith Mooney

"True Stories of Rock and Roll" is a fun song paying homage to local musicians everywhere, to the people that deal with everything from shady agents to last minute cancellations while driving to the gig, yet they take it in stride because the thing that makes it all good is when you are on stage playing and the magic happens and it all just feels so right 'you would not trade one second of it all, not for a million dollars'.

Tison Duni

Tison Duni is the Swedish guitarist with the sweet melodies, mostly known for the single "The Quiet Courage of Those Left at Home" (2021) and the album "Poets & Adventurers" (2022). The releases generated both thousands of streams and hundreds of fans, radio airplay and great reviews; such as in Rock Hard nr 424: 'it shows a fine hand for melodies and will be appreciated by friends of early Joe Satriani'.

Now he's back with the first song ever released featuring vocals, "Raft Survivors". It's a bitter sweet dueling story and a melodic sensation, based on true events about a ship accident in 1983 in the Gulf of Mexico. It is musically inspired by Mark Knopfler and Pink Floyd. Tison Duni tells a deep and inspiring story in a beautiful way.

Glenn Foster

After four decades in the music business, Glen Foster has earned the right to break any rule he wants. And this happy iconoclast shows no signs of compromise on “White Funeral,” a whimsically morbid country-blues number that appears on his latest album, the trend-bucking Unnatural Tendencies

Like a winking eulogy to a vanishing era, the song finds Foster chronicling the impending demise of one Old Snake, a “hardened old metaphoric character” who gets stranded in the desert just as it’s starting to snow.

It’s a sure sign of winter, the geese are flying south
A sure sign of winter, when you see that harvest moon full out
A sure sign of winter, it don’t leave much room for doubt
It’s going to be a White Funeral if Old Snake don’t make it out

Snake’s truck isn’t the only thing that’s breaking down here: It’s his life itself, as Foster’s plaintive yet sardonic vocal makes painfully apparent. All the while, the singer-songwriter-instrumentalist’s Dobro curlicues circle like hungry buzzards over the tasteful burial plot of a backing track laid down by his bandmates in the Glen Foster Group: Marg Foster (harmony vocals, percussion) Marty Steele (keyboards, harmony vocals), Colin Stevenson (bass guitar, harmony vocals) and James McRae (drums).

Playful elegia is just one of the many moods to be discovered on Unnatural Tendencies, a nonconformist manifesto of a record that plays like a defiant response to the winnowed attention spans and fixation on salability that are setting the direction of today’s musical culture. Few marketing consultants, after all, would encourage an artist to begin his album with a title track that’s nearly 17 minutes long and moves fluidly through three different songs, each in a different key but with the same chord progression and tempo. Nor would an A&R executive be turning cartwheels if said artist chose to include another number that incorporated a rapped intro, heavy guitar riffs, a satirical sitar hook, an accordion solo set to a polka beat, a bluegrass banjo break, and a highland bagpipe solo—oh, and a disco finale, complete with walking bass and falsetto vocals. Throw in some lyrical references to the plight of First Nations peoples and the pitfalls of religious obsession, and whammo! Instant anathema to the TikTok generation.

And Foster couldn’t be happier about it. This far into his career, he’s still willing to risk it all to remain genuine.

“Natural tendencies are what we tend to gravitate towards in life,” he says. “My concept of Unnatural Tendencies includes thinking outside the box and attempting things that we would normally shy away from. It involves taking risks and trying different things that could be glorious or disastrous.”

But then, it’s been that way for the Nanaimo-based rock/folk maverick since he burst onto the scene in the ’70s with his original band, Falcon, whose 1980 single “Los Angeles” won a talent contest on CKOC Radio Hamilton. Since then, Foster has worked with the likes of Daniel Lanois and Ray Materick (“Linda Put The Coffee On”) and has taught more than 20 years’ worth of students in his side gig as a professional music teacher, receiving two silver medals from the Royal Conservatory of Music in the process. But the biggest feather in his cap has been his stellar run as a solo artist, which encompasses 10 albums of music in a breathtaking diversity of styles—from the “Rockabilly Fever” of 2020’s Not Far Away to the seasonal side he explored on The Spirit of Christmas the very next year.

Now he takes another bold step into the great unknown with Unnatural Tendencies, which he co-produced with Rick Salt (The Irish Rovers, Kerplunks, Jack Connolly, Gerry Barnum, Phil Dwyer) at Nanaimo’s Mountainview Studio. It’s seeing release on Foster’s own Rescue Records label, which is part of the reason he felt the freedom to stretch out in multiple directions at once.

“This is my tenth album (which prompted the word ‘Tendencies’ in the title), and I’m making it fit for me,” he says. “It’s the way I like to hear music, in album form the way I believe my fans do. These are some of my best songs ever; I’m singing and playing guitar better than I ever have, and I brought in the best musicians I could find, rather than use synthesizers and samples.”

So even though the devil-may-care approach he took to composition this time might not have been devised expressly with the stage in mind, he and his band still have all the ammo they need to further their reputation for killer live work when they do take the new material on the road. Venues across Canada have witnessed the little miracle Glen is live, both on his own and sharing the bill with the likes of Lighthouse, Sammy Hagar, Dr. Hook, Jose Feliciano, Valdy, Jesse Winchester and Stan Rogers. With the new album done, look for them at a showroom, festival, park concert or pub near you. Anything else would be … well, unnatural.

ne=ro

"Just a normal guy doing a normal job who always dreamed of being a rock star. My songs are influenced by personal experiences as well as being a narrative on what I've seen in the world around me.

I'm a singer songwriter who penned a bundle of songs a few years ago and now I'm keen on others to hear them and hopefully have their lives touched by them. I remember how certain songs would be on repeat in my headphones as a child and I'd listen to them over and over, feeling myself change and evolve with each repetition. I'd be honoured if any of my songs had the same effect on someone else. I like to think that my music is a bit of a throwback to the late 80s and early 90s with some guitar driven ballads as well as some tracks that will hopefully get your foot tapping and head bobbing!

I hope you enjoy listening.".

The Refusers

Blasting through the establishment’s twisted goals, The Refusers perform songs of musical defiance. The Refusers speak today’s spirit of rage and simmering revolution against the establishment. As audacious as some think they are, The Refusers passionately refuse to go along with the program. Could they know something we don’t? Yes ladies and gentlemen. Punk rock has always been all about fighting the man, but now it’s about fighting for your life.

Battle lines have been drawn and these Pacific Northwest rockers encourage their viewer to dismiss the notion to 'build back better”, but instead 'fight back bitter'.

Adagio Drag

In 2018 Javier Hinojosa and Isaac Mendiola began to weave themselves into the threads and fabrics of what is now Adagio Drag. Starting out as an acoustic duet they began writing original songs and preforming them at local pubs and bars in the Rio Grande Valley. In 2019 they released their first EP Sketches with Alexander Valdez on drums, Javier Hinojosa taking up the work load of playing, guitar, bass and keyboards and Isaac Mendiola writing all lyrics and recording vocals. Their next EP Never Be the Same was released in 2020. The EP embraced a weightier sound, giving rise to a more somber perspective, distinctly audible in the track "Paranoia." This transition enabled the band to explore fresh dimensions of songwriting and paved the way for innovative ideas in preparation for their upcoming album entitled Handcuffed to the Ferris Wheel, which was released in 2023. Having already produced two EPs and an album, Adagio Drag embarked on the creation of their upcoming single, "Pick A God And Pray," scheduled for a 2024 release.

"Pick a God and Pray" by Adagio Drag is a journey that blends hooks that stick, melodies that linger with a rhythm that just won’t quit. The lyrics deliver a message of hope that remain long after the music has stopped. With roots deeply embedded in the Rio Grande Valley, Adagio Drag brings a touch of smooth sounds and a hint of solid vibes just waiting in the wings to be on the airwaves.

The Offliners

The balance between big global goals and very local, based on personal preference, is the theme of this song, and reflects a very human mindset that isn't always super-rational. The inspiration for the song comes from a chance meeting between strangers, each with their own focus areas in everyday life – coupled with a sincere interest and curiosity to familiarize themselves with and understand the other party.

Rare Breed

Rare Breed released the third single from their upcoming debut album on 29.3.24!

Rare Breed is a brand new rock band from Finland. The band consists of musicians marinated in many soups, who strive to create unique, uncompromising content in the cultural field. Rare Breed released their debut album in the spring of 2024, and singles will be released throughout the winter. Lighter Dark, Lighter Heart is the third of these.

The band talks about their single:

It’s always darkest before the dawn. “Lighter Dark, Lighter Heart” is the third single from the upcoming Rare Breed debut album. The song’s lyrics reflect on the fleeting nature of youth and the inevitable passage of time. It's easy to get lost in nostalgia and forget to live in the moment. Even if life feels meaningless, even then, there’s always hope and the possibility of better days. Just don’t lose your own way in the process.

No Name Faces

No Name Faces are one of the most exciting modern metal bands from Sweden at the moment. Self built and self funded, they have already built a solid fan base all over the world with almost 10k subs on YouTube and 15 million streams on Spotify, over a relatively short period of time. Growing every day. NNF has been described as metal in a pop costume, heavily influenced by film music.

A strong desire to constantly explore and learn from other genres, to add new ingredients into their own music. Morgan who started the band and writes the majority of the music has a clear idea of how it needs to be done: - "I always write music that I love and would listen to myself, without compromising. A wide range of styles and moods but with a solid thread running through. Highly relatable lyrics that can be a helping hand in difficult times, such as Scars, Speak etc. It has become the NNF identity, and we are sticking to it."
