The Verve Jazz Ensemble

It takes a bold, knowledgeable, and inventive group to call itself The Verve Jazz Ensemble. The moniker Verve conjures the legendary jazz label Verve Records: once home to the greatest pioneering names in the artform – from Duke Ellington, Stan Getz and Ella Fitzgerald to Bill Evans, Count Basie, and Buddy Rich. It is in the spirit of the Verve label’s 1950s - ‘60s hard bop heyday that The Verve Jazz Ensemble composes, arranges, and performs jazz of a timeless quality. Across eight albums and counting – the latest entitled All In – the “VJE” has been satisfying the cravings of critics and audiences alike, consistently placing near or at the very top of the JazzWeek radio chart for the past decade. No less than Ellis Marsalis, the late, revered patriarch of the highly distinguished Marsalis Family that gave us Wynton, Branford, Jason and Delfeayo Marsalis, observed, “The VJE is the new MJQ,” referring to the fabled Modern Jazz Quartet.

Drummer Josh Feldstein founded The Verve Jazz Ensemble in 2006 as a band that paid homage to the past while vehemently establishing newer, younger audiences for the now vintage sound. “Part of the band’s mission,” said Feldstein, “is to expand the audience of classic instrumental jazz, to identify melodies that pop audiences can easily relate and groove to – but not need a degree in music to dig.”

The Verve Jazz Ensemble is a band that “chooses to move in a musical direction that’s appealing to radio as well as our broad base of US and international listeners,” Josh added. “Our mission is to bring forward the acoustic jazz artform in a way that both veteran listeners and newcomers to Jazz easily appreciate.”

Feldstein’s passion for acoustic jazz stems back to when he was 11 years old and living with his family in Queens, New York. He was taking drum lessons at the time from a teacher who turned him onto the volcanic Gene Krupa.   “One day my teacher told me I sounded like Krupa,” Josh recalled. “Well, I don’t think that was remotely true, but I dug Gene’s drumming intensely and couldn’t stop listening.” The LP he pointed Josh to was Verve’s Choice: The Best of Gene Krupa.” Josh was hooked.

"I spent the next 10 years grabbing up all of the jazz albums recorded for Verve Records that I could,” he states. “I hung out listening to Papa Jo Jones and the Countsmen at the West End Café on Broadway and 113th street in Manhattan.  I’d catch the incredible Buddy Rich and his big band, and legends like Max Roach, Art Blakey, and Count Basie.  Any given month would bring into town the best of the best like (saxophonist) Stan Getz, (pianist) Monty Alexander, and on and on.

“I put music on the backburner once I entered college, however, because I didn’t think I could make money as a jazz musician,” Josh said. “While I kept practicing and did play from time to time – I even toured for a while with a big band in the mid-Atlantic area – it was part-time stuff by and large.

“Some years later, when I was living in Connecticut, I came across the playing of a young saxophonist / keyboardist named Jon Blanck. He really impressed me as a young cat who could really play in the authentic hardbop idiom, which is my foundation. I approached him to play locally – just for fun. We ended up booking restaurants and country clubs and becoming close friends.  The band developed a strong reputation and a faithful following. Once the VJE started playing clubs throughout Connecticut and eventually in New York proper, things started happening.”

The VJE was a quintet when it first ventured into the studio to record its debut album, It’s About Time (2012), followed by East End Sojourn (2014) which featured guest Peter Bernstein on guitar. Both charted Top 10 on the JazzWeek radio charts. Those albums were followed by top 25 Perimeter (2016) and yet another top 10 album, Swing-A-Nova (2017), recorded by the rhythm section as a trio album.  For 2018, Feldstein expanded the tenor sax, trumpet, piano, bass and drums quintet into a septet with alto / flute and trombone for the VJE’s fifth albumConnect The Dots, a change that shot the band to the #1 position atop the JazzWeek chart for two weeks. Next came Night Mode (2019) – another top 10-charter – followed during the Covid lockdown by The VJE: Very Live! (2021) - recorded at a pre-pandemic benefit concert in Hadley, MA - which kept the VJE brand alive and well.

For VJE’s eighth and latest album, All In, the septet joyfully explores the theme of “Mid-20th century Americana” via two original compositions and eight arrangements of some classic and other little-heard material. The band consists of Tatum Greenblatt on trumpet, Willie Applewhite on trombone, Alexa Tarantino on alto sax / flute, Jon Blanck on tenor sax, Matt Oestreicher on piano and guitar, Elias Bailey on bass, and VJE leader Josh Feldstein on drums.

Highlights of the album include the Tatum Greenblatt original title track, “All In;” an Afro Cuban approach to Neal Hefti’s beloved “The Odd Couple Theme;” another Greenblatt original entitled “What I Meant to Say Was,” set up as a musical conversation between trumpet and alto sax; and a piano trio whirl through Jean “Toots” Thielemans “Bluesette.”

All this music, along with the rest of “All In,” is in passionate keeping of The Verve Jazz Ensemble’s sworn mission to expand the audience of instrumental jazz in the United States and worldwide. “This is very important to all of us,” Feldstein shares. “My daughter is in high school, and she and her friends like our music. There are listeners everywhere of all ages who don’t know any jazz history.  But when they hear our approach to jazz, they soak it in.  Identifying and performing jazz melodies that pop audiences can relate to – catchy yet legitimate music, with a pulse – that’s our target.”

Fox Nigon

"Adsum", the third album by singer-songwriter Fox Nigon, is a veritable cocktail of style and a mix of genres.

Produced in collaboration with British producer Matt Butler (Paul Mc Cartney, Madness, Kool And The Gang, Tears For Fears), who handled all the arrangements, and with the invaluable help of Rob Butler, who handled the vocal production, Fox presents his most accomplished album.
Recorded across 3 countries (France, Spain and United Kingdom), with the help of 3 studios (Mysound, Studio 110 and The Stone House), it's the culmination of two and a half years of work.

Categorically refusing to be locked into a single musical style, Fox happily moves from pop to rock, from reggae to electro, offering jazzy nods, and using vintage sounds as well as classical or current.
The musical link can certainly be found at the level of the approach to cinematographic illustration which characterizes the whole of the work.

I thoroughly enjoyed Mike's "From the Heart" in 2008, but WOW! This one truly moves! He's easily on par with smooth jazz greats, like David Benoit, Brian Culbertson, Jeff Lorber and Gregg Karukas. This has a nice blend of smooth ballads and moving tunes! Great compositions. Great musical ensemble. Thanks Mike! I'll be sure to spread the news about this one. Marcus Sukiennik

"It's nice to be able to surprise yourself while you're playing...."

Marcus Sukiennik sees himself as a wanderer between sound worlds. As a pianist, composer and arranger, he explores centuries of musical history with his work - and examines the developments of current listening habits.

Living in Cologne since 1993, the artist uses components of classical music and jazz, motifs of traditional folk songs as well as pop music elements.

Sukiennik writes arrangements of classical melodies, composing mainly for piano solo, occasionally for jazz bands. As a bar pianist, he has also been playing contemporary background music for more than 25 years in a wide variety of venues, including as artistic director in the piano bar of the Excelsior Hotel Ernst in Cologne and at the Musical Dome as the entrée to the show Moulin Rouge.

BETWEEN KICKING, JAZZ AND CLASSICAL MUSIC

Born in the Rhineland, Sukiennik comes from a music-loving family. He takes up the piano at the age of 8, later founds a school band together with his brother and develops more and more his own style, influenced by jazz music. At that time, however, the young amateur musician is also preoccupied with a second passion: playing football. After some deliberation, he makes a choice - and decides in favour of music.

From 1987 Marcus Sukiennik studies jazz piano and classical piano in Hilversum, the Netherlands, with Karel Boehlee, Henk Elkerbout and Rob Madna. He completes further studies in composition/arrangement under the supervision of film composer and conductor Jurre Haanstra at the Conservatorium in Amsterdam between 1997-2011, as well as with jazz pianist and WDR big band leader Bill Dobbins at the Hochschule für Musik in Cologne.

GETTING TO THE CORE

Sukiennik's artistic development is shaped by his encounter with the Cologne pianist and composer Eckart Wilkens in the early nineties. Their exchange leads him to an in-depth study of classical piano literature and variation works. It also awakens his interest in tracing the unifying element of music-making and its essential core beyond stylistics and forms of expression. As a pianist, Sukiennik has mastered a wide range of styles - what his pieces have in common though is simplicity, clarity and feeling.

To date, his published work includes 7 albums, several singles and 4 music books released on Sukiennik's own label Line 21. Among them, the most significant works are the big band project A Night In Tunisia Suite (2000), the piano solo album Atme Seele, heile - Breathe soul, heal - (2016) and the first live performance in front of an audience at LOFT Cologne in 2017 Beste Tage (Best days)..

For his compositions and arrangements, Sukiennik has been repeatedly honoured with the VDM Award and occupied top spots on the charts99 with his releases.

Marcus Sukiennik lectured combo and big band at the University of Duisburg, taught music history at the VHS Cologne and has been running his own piano school since 1993.

Claudia Campagnol

Claudia Campagnol's voice is extremely powerful, yet warm and soulful. She takes inspiration from jazz, pop, soul, and R&B, showcasing a stunning flair for improvisation and vocal arrangements.

Claudia Campagnol has a deep-rooted affection for jazz fusion, and she has achieved great success on the jazz scene in Denmark as well as abroad. Her debut album "I'm Strong" (2019) was nominated for Danish Music Awards Jazz in two categories: 'Best Vocal Album' and 'Best New Act', and received excellent reviews worldwide.

But for a while, Claudia has considered trying her hand at other genres.

With her single "Dance With Me" (2020) – inspired by names like Chaka Khan and Sade – Claudia stepped into a funky pop/R&B world that suits her amazingly.

In February 2021, Claudia released the beautiful love ballad Abracadabra, with which she participated in 'Dansk Melodi Grand Prix 2021' (the Danish pre-selection for ‘Eurovision Song Contest’).

In March 2021, the super catchy "Do You Love Me (Dance Edit)" was released – and with an ongoing desire to challenge herself, she continues down the Pop/R&B/Soul path with "Everything's OK" (June 2021), "Confused" (May 2022) and the latest release "Love You All The Way".

* * *

Vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Claudia Campagnol is a truly unique musical talent and one of Denmark's rising stars – with a broad crossover appeal and a huge international potential.

She was born in Budapest, Hungary (1987), raised in Malmoe, Sweden, where she graduated from Malmö Academy of Music. For several years now, she has been living in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Judith Owen

Welsh singer and performer Judith Owen is releasing her new album, "Come On & Get It", via Twanky Records, together with a charming, burlesque-infused new video for "Tess's Torch Song". The video was filmed at the Toulouse Theatre in New Orleans, featuring the bow-tie "Loving Big Band".

Delicious, delightful, bodacious, brave, insightful, seductive and fun - just some of the many adjectives one might use to describe Judith Owen's fascinating and alluring new album.

Owen, a now New Orleans native who originally hails from Wales, conceived of the project as a result of her childhood fascination with the jazz music of some of the ballsiest women of the Jazz and Blues world, including unsung trailblazers Nellie Lutcher and Julia Lee whom she discovered hidden on the shelves of her father's record collection alongside the likes of Oscar Peterson and Jelly Roll Morton. Captivated and enchanted by these "unapologetic" chanteuses of the 40's/50's (Pearl Bailey, Dinah Washington, Blossom Dearie, Peggy Lee, Julie London), who were singing about sex - and enjoying it at a time when women were meant to sing about romance - Owen made it her mission to dig deep and find out more from both a musical and historical perspective. The result is "Come On & Get It," the most joyful, uplifting, and empowering project to emerge out of Covid; a throw-back with a fresh feel complete with a look and style that speaks of all those delectable, hugely entertaining women who broke the glass ceiling with their shoe heels and were ever so proud of it!

Recorded at Esplanade Studios in New Orleans, "Come On & Get It" features a stellar cast of musicians, including Jason Marsalis, Donald Harrison, Charlie Gabriel, Nicholas Payton, David Torkanowsky, Kevin Louis...
