Birds are better

The brainchild of Norwegian singer-songwriter Stian Fjelldal, Birds Are Better brings a unique slant to folk music with a fusion of traditional folk, power-pop, synth-rock and indie-pop.

The Other Side Reviews describes the project as a meeting between Charlie Puth and Mumford and Sons while Of Monsters and Men comes to the minds of Nordic Music Central and Music To Blame.

Fjelldal himself is a huge fan of artists like Fleet Foxes and Loney Dear and you might be able to spot Birds Are Better somewhere in between.

The project was launched this fall and “Marigold” is his second single. More singles will come before the debut album release in 2023.

The Maple Blues Band

For nearly a quarter century, The Maple Blues Band has been the cornerstone of the Toronto Blues Society’s annual Maple Blues Awards (MBA), honoring the creme de la creme in Canadian blues music. With its upcoming full-length record, “Hey Nola,” the Maple Blues Band will step into the spotlight, showcasing the lively instrumental compositions the all-star ensemble has created over the course of its decades together, out now from Cordova Bay Records.

Bassist, band leader and musical director Gary Kendall - perhaps best known for his association with Downchild Blues Band - started the project back in 1998, after a meeting of the Toronto Blues Society.  “I boldly told all present that the music that accompanied the award presentations should be better. The comeback was, ‘Let’s see what you can do.’ It must be working because the band has been the centerpiece of the Maple Blues Awards ever since,” Kendall recalls.

Kendall dreamed of putting together a big band that could tackle a wide variety of styles, including Delta blues, Southside Chicago blues, New Orleans funk, uptown blues, zydeco, blues rock, and most of all Canadian blues, and recruited some of the finest folks on the Canadian blues scene to join him in making that dream come true.

Providing the theme and background music for the event, as well as accompanying the special guests performing at the awards ceremony, the group is made up of many MBA winners and nominees. The band’s current lineup includes Pat Carey on tenor saxophone, Teddy Leonard on guitar, Al Lerman on harmonica and acoustic guitar, Jim Casson drums and percussion, Howard Moore on trumpet, Lance Anderson on Hammond B3, piano and accordion, Alison Young on baritone, tenor and soprano saxophones, Meirion Kelly on trombone, and Roshane Wright on percussion.

Kendall calls Let’s Go a true group effort, featuring contributions from band members both past and present, with songwriting credits drawn from over the group’s 24-year history.

“The songwriting helped The Maple Blues Band create a personal and unique sound. It’s what I refer to as ‘big band blues,’” he notes. “The men and women I chose to surround myself with in The Maple Blues Band are part of the enormous southern Ontario pool of blues talent. Each one of them is a star.”

John Otto Young

"Torn Away" is a tribute to Ukrainian soldiers and their loved ones that they had to leave to bravely fight for their homeland. While it speaks of the horrors of war, it is ultimately a ballad of hope and desire to return to those they love.

John Otto Young is a native Connecticut keyboardist and songwriter who has been playing, writing, and recording in a number of projects over the last 6 decades.  He started his musical journey in second grade when he started taking accordion lessons from Naugatuck Valley legend, Sal Ferla.  Years later he would transition to such unique instruments as the Ace Tone organ, the Hohner Pianet, and a Hammond CV organ, playing with local bands the Cliff Dwellers, Blues and Novelty, the Poem, and Bigfoot.  In the mid-70s, John married the love of his life, Camille, raised two boys, coached little league, ran a marathon, got his Masters degree, worked as a computer programmer and IT director, and in general lived the all-American dream, with music retreating to hobby status. But it always remained his most fervent passion.

Kenneth Cole

Kenneth Cole continues to put out excellent music. Millions of listeners the world over are enjoying his unique country flair. "Something in the Moon" was written while Kenneth was in Nashville recording a music video. He awoke during the middle of the night with the lyrics of this song flashing through his mind. Once in the studio, the music brought back the exact essence of what he felt the night this song was written. The exhilaration of escaping the darkness and running into the light with someone who unexpectedly turns up in your life. Something seems so right. There must have been "Something in the Moon". Another great song by Kenneth Cole.

James Leeds

James Leeds about the track:

'"Thunderstruck" is one of my favorite songs from my new album "Whenever". A lot of piano and strings and the wonderful voice of JACOB combined with a strong drum and bass accompaniment makes it a power piano ballad.

I composed this song when I met someone and thought she would be my partner for life. In the end, it turned out that it was only our last date.'

Kate Rena

Who doesn't know it: lying awake at night and brooding over decisions made long ago?
Kate Rena opens her new single "Million Ways" with this image. The song is a break-up-song in the broadest sense, but it is anything but a ballad. Even more it's a powerful scene about the millions of different ways to individual happiness, which sometimes include partings.

'When a pair of shoes no longer fits or is worn out, it has to go. To put it simply, this is also the case with relationships between people. Old things have to go in order to make room for new things. It's just that we have a much harder time with people than with shoes.'

Mauricio Yrivarren

Madrid-based singer-songwriter Mauricio Yrivarren aka Binary Drift releases the uplifting pop/rock Christmas single "Smile". "Smile" is the third single of Binary Drift's second album "Mortido". According to Mauricio, 'Smile is a Rock/Pop song that captures the excitement of living life at its fullest, without any fears, as long as you have love in your heart. I went through a period where I hadn’t realized that happiness had always been there for the taking. Looking back, I think it was a side effect of the Covid pandemic and the lockdowns. Shortly after the confinement restrictions were lifted in Madrid, the line 'the joy of being alive / no one’s got the right to take it back' popped into my head. It felt as if the universe had sent it for me to use as the foundation for a song.'

George Dooley

George Dooley is a singer songwriter who has been playing and performing for over twenty years. He had always been frustrated in trying to get his songs produced. About two years ago he discovered the virtual world of music production, and he has never looked back. In just under two years, he already has four songs under license with Alcon Sleeping Giant (“ASG”), the music licensing arm of Alcon Entertainment, and another with Figure & Groove, a publishing house out of NY. His reputation as a lyricist continues to grow and his songs are generally fun and include great stories and clever lyrics. His catalog continues to grow, and he hopes his songs bring some joy. He also would welcome the opportunity to connect with recording artists who want to further bring his songs to life.

Judith Owen

Welsh singer and performer Judith Owen is releasing her new album, "Come On & Get It", via Twanky Records, together with a charming, burlesque-infused new video for "Tess's Torch Song". The video was filmed at the Toulouse Theatre in New Orleans, featuring the bow-tie "Loving Big Band".

Delicious, delightful, bodacious, brave, insightful, seductive and fun - just some of the many adjectives one might use to describe Judith Owen's fascinating and alluring new album.

Owen, a now New Orleans native who originally hails from Wales, conceived of the project as a result of her childhood fascination with the jazz music of some of the ballsiest women of the Jazz and Blues world, including unsung trailblazers Nellie Lutcher and Julia Lee whom she discovered hidden on the shelves of her father's record collection alongside the likes of Oscar Peterson and Jelly Roll Morton. Captivated and enchanted by these "unapologetic" chanteuses of the 40's/50's (Pearl Bailey, Dinah Washington, Blossom Dearie, Peggy Lee, Julie London), who were singing about sex - and enjoying it at a time when women were meant to sing about romance - Owen made it her mission to dig deep and find out more from both a musical and historical perspective. The result is "Come On & Get It," the most joyful, uplifting, and empowering project to emerge out of Covid; a throw-back with a fresh feel complete with a look and style that speaks of all those delectable, hugely entertaining women who broke the glass ceiling with their shoe heels and were ever so proud of it!

Recorded at Esplanade Studios in New Orleans, "Come On & Get It" features a stellar cast of musicians, including Jason Marsalis, Donald Harrison, Charlie Gabriel, Nicholas Payton, David Torkanowsky, Kevin Louis...

Syd Carter West

Beyond the anthemic blues rock progressions and in-your-face lyrics, Syd Carter West has been navigating her way through finding the potential in her imperfections rather than striving for perfection. "'Motorbike Man' is my muse - the wild, carefree, gritty, and badass man I desire and the person I want to be. Through this song, I find inspiration in letting loose and tearing myself away from the idea of perfection and normal," West confesses. "Motorbike Man" presents West's truth as a heavier, rock-forward artist.
