The Flying Beets

 

 

Formed in late Spring of 2022, The Flying Beets' music showcases a maturity and depth that belies their short existence. Fronted by guitarist/vocalist Nathan Waller, a popular DFW-based singer-songwriter known for his extraordinary vocal range and powerful delivery, the band is rounded out by bassist DL Cross (The Troumatics) and drummer Kenn Scott (Birthday Suit, "Raphael" of the original 1990s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles films).

 

Drawing on many rock influences, from The Beatles to Nirvana, the band's music combines catchy hooks, driving tempos, and a pop sensibility that can easily find a home on any indie-rock fan's playlist.  In conjunction with the recent Fall 2023 release of their first single, "Maybe Baby," The Flying Beets were nominated for "Best New Band" in Ft. Worth by Fort Worth Weekly Magazine.  The band continues to write, record, and perform, and look forward to the release of their debut EP in 2024.

RJ Archer & the Painful Memories

Primarily inspired by blues-influenced rock music from the 1960’s and 1970’s, RJ Archer & the Painful Memories were formed in July 2019 when Richard Archer (guitar, vocals) received a prize of some studio time in a songwriting competition. Two long-term friends Roger James and Ben Kingsbury agreed to help with the recording session, playing bass and drums respectively. The results were so good that they decided to make the band a permanent thing.

Recording with just a few days of studio time scheduled across the next two years, the band completed a debut album ‘Hot Mess’ in September 2021 to an enthusiastic critical response, with Rock & Roll Circus citing a “"A 60's R&B vibe, fused with a more contemporary feel" and Robs Raw Music hearing "Powerful and tough Blues/Rock and dare I say an infusion of punk"!

With acclaimed live sets at the Cambridge Salty Dog Blues Festival and Six Six Bar under their belts and a growing reputation as a killer live act, their second album ‘Horseplay!’ was released to more acclaim in September 2023 with Music For All proclaiming it as a “practically perfect album” and comparisons being drawn to everyone from MC5 to Grand Funk Railroad to Dr.Feelgood!!

The band have since expanded to a four piece with the addition of Marc Ritchie on drums and Ben moving to second guitar. They are currently working on new songs for a new album expected for release late 2024.

Caroline Cotto

Fiery blues, rock and soul songstress Caroline Cotto’s first full album is a musical tribute to her quest for her own individual truth. Before landing permanently in her now home of New Orleans, she spent years soaking up experiences while living in New York, Paris and London, walking the same inspirational paths of her artistic influences, writing her own music and poetry, and playing in downtown bars and clubs. Her album Bayou Sun, out now, is Cotto’s own stunning autobiography, with each track divulging crucial weaves that have formed her life tapestry of faith, love, and self-understanding.

Cotto’s track “Young Girl in the City” takes us to the start of her journey which began in New York City, a city Cotto refers to as the first love of her life. “I wanted to capture the rhythm of New York in my song,” she explains. “I see myself vividly walking up and down the avenue with desire in my soul to make a name for myself in the world. I feel the grit of the sidewalk and footsteps of my heroes. I see the young girl with a guitar performing in cafes rambling through the night with love and passion.”

Her success in musically seizing the sound of New York in “Young Girl in the City” is delightfully enchanting, as pounding heart drum beats from Country Hall of Fame drummer Eddie Bayers seem to thrust our senses directly into the routine of Manhattan’s bustling streets and sidewalks. Ronnie Eades’ – the co-founder of the Muscle Shoals Horns Section - saxophone then provides the illusion of scurrying taxi cabs, as Nelson Blanchard’s piano suggests varying conversations and crowded movements. Cotto’s guitar and soulful voice soon lure us in further with the lyrics “Paint my pain into a starry night/I know, the stars ain’t a dime/But dreams are better in moonlight,” reassuring us that any painful learning experiences here have only made her dreams grow clearer and stronger. As she continues on singing “Radio blasts, I’m free at last/All my tears slip through the sidewalk cracks,” we are made confident that music is the outlet that makes her pain disappear, before she leaves us with the hopeful lines “But I’ll find my way/I’ll find my way/I’ll find my way.”

Cotto is also quick to mention that both “Young Girl in the City’s co-producer, David Hyde plays bass on the song, and “Mystery Ride,” another track from her album, were inspired by Bruce Springsteen’s Born to Run album. “His adventures of rock ‘n’ roll and romance in New Jersey captured my heart” she explains. “I love how Springsteen captures the magic of one night in his music.” Much like “Young Girl in the City”, “Mystery Ride” bursts musically with the excitement of endless possibility and wonder, though this time we are jolted into a shared adventure with someone we love and adore, while Cotto’s lyrics rouse “I see love written on the wind tonight/As we go down and down and down this/Mystery Ride.”
Cotto states that she has a curiosity not only for the capacity of love in the human soul, but also that of suffering. As we head toward the end of the album we hear Caroline Cotto’s solid musical versatility stretched and showcased even further in her track “Awake to Love”, a song that integrates bouncy reggae undertones and saxophone with deeply powerful and provocative lyrics such as “God bless the innocent/They learn from lies/Man throws bombs/In a child’s eyes/Hate grows when one’s asleep/Awake to love on the city streets.” Cotto addresses the heartbreak that innocent people often end up adjusting themselves due to evil, and that those who close their eyes to violence contribute to a growth of hatred. “‘Awake to Love’ is my song for the world,” she explains. “I remember myself in Audubon Park in New Orleans with my pen and paper looking at my reflection in the water and reflecting on the state of the world. ‘Awake to Love’ is my message to the global consciousness that Love is always the answer in any situation, especially in the face of war and destruction.”

Cotto insists that she has learned from her years of travel and through making this album that faith, daydreaming, and love are her greatest powers. “I daydreamed how I wanted my life to be every day until it was. I still have flashes of that young girl with a guitar and suitcase in hand going into the depths of the unknown riding the path into the Bayou Sun.”

Phil Marinucci

Former Niagara Falls artist Phil Marinucci didn’t have far to go while searching for that ’80s sound. Turns out he had a song from the ’80s he has been sitting on for nearly 40 years. His new single “FLY” could be a montage song from any ’80s action movie, but it took a bit of finessing. 

The 54-year-old multimedia/marketing developer gave it some big production and harmony vocals to nail that throwback sound. 

He produced it over two years during the pandemic and added a more “positive message to help those who needed it.” Marinucci, who currently lives in Kawartha Lakes, dabbled in short films 20 years ago but found his footing in multimedia and marketing. He took some time for a Q&A to discuss his nostalgic-sounding rocker.

This song carries several powerful meanings.

Firstly, the symbolism of the duo of artists and the song's title conveys feminine strength. The main message is embedded in the lyrics "all saints were once born as humans," as everyone starts small, but we are defined by our actions.

I listened to the song and read the lyrics and ended up singing the song. Here’s how it resonated in me. I’ve struggled with a few addictions in my life. The worst of them has been alcohol, which made me so impulsive, untrustworthy and reckless, that everything dear to me was about to break. And it was happening because of me. I needed to make a change and I did. But I also remember how my troubles made me blur the accusing voices and constant pain in my mind with booze. I was a chronic depressive alone on a highway to hell. And addicts are worthless enough for others to write them off without getting to know anything about their reasons. We all need to communicate how we feel. We all need to hear the others. If we don’t, we’re cowards in our own field of battle. 'I’m only flesh and blood. Can I count on you?'" The Hi Status Qualified series will be releasing more songs in the upcoming months, all very various from style and all including a whole band.

The Black Vultures- Are described as an Energetic 4 piece Rock Band, hailing from the heart of the Gwent Valleys, South Wales. The band crafted their name, through their collective enjoyment for bands including: 'The Black Keys' 'Black Sabbath' & 'Them Crooked Vultures' - Resulting in the creation of their title: 'THE BLACK VULTURES'.

Single 'NEVER SAY'- Focuses on a relationship, whereby one person within the relationship realises that there is a need to move on. Having come to the conclusion that things aren't working, the party ending the relationship is hopeful that the other person doesn't present themselves back in their life, in the hope that they agree to walk away in a different direction without further issues or problems.

The band plan on releasing their third single during April 2024 (with a further video), which will be recorded during January 2024 with local Welsh Producer Chris Peet. The band will also begin recording their debut album during early-mid 2024, again with Welsh-based producer Chris Peet (North House Studio, Ebbw Vale).

The Black Vultures have played relentlessly throughout 2023 & they look forward to new upcoming shows and festivals during 2024. The band plan to grow their name across Wales & the UK, by playing energetic, catchy songs, engaging crowds through their growing stage presence.

DownTown Mystic. New album

Sha-La Music Inc. announces the release of the new single "SuperStar" by US Roots Rocker DownTown Mystic. The single will be digitally released to radio via iPluggers and distributed worldwide via The Orchard/Sony Music.

"SuperStar" is the 2nd single to be released from the upcoming "AmeriKarma" album and follows the successful "Fly" single, which has airplay on over 150 stations in 25 countries. Like "Fly", "SuperStar" features long-time compatriots Steve Holley (Paul McCartney, Elton John) on drums and urban legend Paul Page (Ian Hunter, Dion) on bass and was recorded at famed Shorefire Studios where DownTown Mystic recorded On E Street with Max Weinberg and Garry Tallent from the E Street Band.

"SuperStar" has a vintage 1975 sound that recalls a time when Elton John, David Bowie and Marc Bolan were the rage of the UK Glam era. Bang a gong and give "SuperStar" a spin!

The Western Country Band

It all started with a van. No, not a fan. Andy M. Veit didn't have a fan back in those days. Except his mother. - God bless all the cheering mothers out there! - He just had a van. It was old, a little bit rusty and slow. „I'm on the road, have nowhere to go, no hurry, I take it slow...“ (“I'm On The Road” by TWCB) 

Andy took all his money from his bank account to buy a guitar, a little PA and this old van. He quit his studies at university. Andy wanted to be a musician. Surely his parents felt really enthusiastic about this well thought out idea of their youngest son.

The following years were filled with little money but with lots of fun. To make your living as a musician is hard work but filled with passion, friendship to impressive people and sound, sound, sound. 

In 2017 Andy M. Veit took the chance to found TWCB with his great guitar playing friend Marco Birkner. The very talented bass player Mike Oberhauser and the fabulous drummer Erny Moucka joined them.

The first concert was arranged quickly. The band worked hard and had a lot of fun to create their own sound. But the joy in the matter was even greater: The first concert already packed! Incredible.

And how did it continue? Logically with the second concert. And? The hall was full again. Madness. More and more guests came to the following concerts. The setlist was constantly expanded. Guest musicians invited. 

Fireworks of fun shared with the audience. Own songs have been written. The first album "The Journey" was recorded in 2018. The single „Christmas In The Country“ was released in 2019 and in 2020 Corona couldn't stop them. „Little Love Song“ was produced. In 2021 it was released worldwide and reached a great amount of airplay (nearly) all over the world!
