Ben Harper

Grammy award-winning guitarist, songwriter, and bandleader Ben Harper enjoyed cult status on the jam band scene in the 1990s largely due to the success of his debut album, Welcome to the Cruel World, and its follow-up, Fight for Your Mind, before gaining wider attention near the decade's end. During the 21st century, he transcended the genre to become a wildly diverse performer, collaborator, and sideman who has worked with artists ranging from the Blind Boys of Alabama and Charlie Musselwhite to John Mayer. Harper drew his influences from classic singer/songwriters, blues revivalists, guitar slingers, and jam bands like Blues Traveler and Phish, which meant he was embraced by critics and college kids alike. Despite finding commercial success with the radio single "Steal My Kisses" in 2000, Harper continued to explore different (and often challenging) musical textures during the early 21st century, enjoying a solid fan base at home and a considerable amount of fame in Europe, where he was named 2003's Artist of the Year by the French branch of Rolling Stone.

A native of California, Harper grew up listening to blues, folk, soul, R&B, and reggae. He started playing guitar as a child and began to perform regularly as a preteen. During his adolescence, he focused heavily on the acoustic slide guitar, which eventually became his signature instrument. Harper scored a deal with Virgin Records in 1992 after maintaining a steady schedule of shows in the L.A. area; two years later, he released his debut album, Welcome to the Cruel World, to positive reviews.

Released in 1995, the politically heavy Fight for Your Mind made for a strong sophomore effort, an obvious growth in musical experimentation and individual declamation. It was also the songwriter's first record to later reach gold status. Harper's third album, 1997's The Will to Live, pushed his blues-oriented alternative folk into the middle mainstream, becoming a mainstay at college radio and making inroads at adult alternative radio. Recorded over two years of touring in support of Fight for Your Mind, The Will to Live also introduced the Innocent Criminals, Harper's longstanding backup band. The Innocent Criminals -- bassist Juan Nelson, drummer Dean Butterworth, and percussionist David Leach -- helped solidify Harper's musical rhythms and emotional diversity over the years to come.

Harper's career gained momentum during 1998 and 1999. One of his most successful albums to date, 1999's Burn to Shine, blended his fondness of '20s jazz compositions with urban beatboxing, resulting in a clever and passionate collection of songs. "Steal My Kisses" and "Suzie Blue" were radio favorites, landing him two headlining world tours and an opening spot on the Dave Matthews Band's annual summer trek in 2000. The following spring, Harper issued Live from Mars, a double disc of live electric and acoustic material spanning the previous year's tour and including covers of material by Led Zeppelin, the Verve, and Marvin Gaye.

Harper dove into worldbeat on his fifth studio effort, Diamonds on the Inside, which appeared in March 2003. He toured through Europe the following year with the Blind Boys of Alabama, and the two acts entered Capitol Records' basement studios after the tour's commencement to lay down ten tracks together. The resulting collaborative album (issued under the names of both Harper and the Blind Boys of Alabama), There Will Be a Light, was released in September 2004, followed by the concert CD/DVD package Live at the Apollo in 2005.

Eager to release more material, Harper reconvened the Innocent Criminals and issued the double album Both Sides of the Gun in March 2006. The album reached number seven on the Billboard album charts and rose to number one in Australia. While touring in support of the record, Harper and company began playing a new slew of songs during their evening soundchecks, eventually decamping to Paris and recording the new material within one week. This resulted in two records -- Lifeline and Live at Twist and Shout Records -- both of which were issued in 2007.

For his 2009 album White Lies for Dark Times, Harper recorded with the band Relentless7, whose members had previously worked with Harper on the track "Serve Your Soul" from Both Sides of the Gun. Harper & the Relentless7 recorded Live from the Montreal International Jazz Festival in July 2009 and released the album early the following year. Afterwards, Harper began working on his first solo album in years, using Jackson Browne's basement as a recording studio and collaborating with Ringo Starr on two tracks. The album's first single, "Rock n' Roll Is Free," was released during the early spring of 2011, followed two months later by the full-length Give Till It's Gone, and in 2012 by the career retrospective By My Side. Harper then moved over to Stax and teamed with blues legend Charlie Musselwhite for 2013's collaboratively released Get Up! It won the 2014 Grammy for Best Blues Album.

Harper went back to his roots on his next offering. He teamed with his mother, Ellen Harper, a singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist in her own right, and the director of The Folk Music Center and Museum in Claremont, California -- which his grandparents founded -- for the recording Childhood Home. Ellen wrote four tunes on the set while Ben wrote six, and they performed together throughout. The album was issued by Concord in May 2014. Next, Harper reunited with his band the Innocent Criminals for 2016's Call It What It Is, the group's first studio album since 2007's Lifeline. Harper and Musselwhite announced a second collaborative album in January 2018 by issuing the title track single to No Mercy in This Land. A second single, "The Bottle Wins Again," was released in March followed by the album on the 30th. The next year saw Harper write and produce gospel legend Mavis Staples' 14th studio LP, the acclaimed We Get By, and in 2020 he released Winter Is for Lovers, an all-instrumental lap steel album.

AudioValley Changes Name To Targetspot

AudioValley Group, the Belgian company that owns the audio ad tech provider Targetspot, is changing its name to take on the branding of its largest division. AudioValley’s board has approved switching its name to Targetspot. It also plans to sell off the Winamp audio player business as part of what the company says is a “refocusing” on the digital audio monetization business, where it sees strong momentum.

“Our name change reflects our decision to accelerate growth in digital audio monetization,” said chairman and founder Alexandre Saboundjian. “Podcasts, streaming, gaming: in all of these fast-growing markets we are ready to make a difference by capitalizing on our proprietary technologies, a portfolio of massive, international audiences and the trust of leading advertisers. By bearing the Targetspot flag, we are also clarifying our positioning to our customers and shareholders.”

Targetspot makes up nearly all of AudioValley’s business – last year 92% of its revenue came from the ad tech unit. Targetspot has also been growing at a rapid pace. During the first quarter of this year its revenue jumped 34.6% following full-year 2021 results that saw Targetspot revenue grow 50% for the full year.

AudioValley says the gains have been driven by expansion of its business in both the U.S. and Europe. It says that momentum, as well as new opportunities offered by the digital audio market, are at the heart of its refocusing decision. The company says the changes should enable it to focus more resources on developing Targetspot’s capabilities. Launched in 2007 as one of the original online audio advertising platforms, Targetspot currently works with audio publishers to provide end-to-end integration between advertisers and publishers through both direct and programmatic buying.

“The next step in this refocusing process will be the sale of our Winamp platform, a project justified by the significant investments and recruitment required for its development, which are now incompatible with our new roadmap,” said Saboundjian.

AudioValley says Winamp currently has 80 million monthly active users worldwide with a mix of podcasts, radio streams, audiobooks and other audio content. Winamp was first developed for Microsoft Windows by Nullsoft, which later sold the technology to AOL in 1999 for $80 million. AudioValley – which was then called Radionomy – bought Winamp and Shoutcast from AOL in 2014 in a deal said to have been valued in the $5 to $10 million range. It announced in 2019 that it planned to release Winamp 6 in 2019 but three years later, no update has materialized.

AudioValley’s name change to Targetspot will mean that as of today (June 24) the company will adopt a new stock symbol in Paris and Brussel where its shares trade on the Euronext Growth exchanges. It will become “ALTGS.” The company also announced it plans to release its mid-year revenue report on July 26.

Cass Clayton

Music fans who are missing the craft of storytelling through song have gravitated towards Cass Clayton's brutal honesty and clarity of message. "We're All Going Down" is a masterfully told story that plays with dark subject matter both lyrically and instrumentally.

The song's deep, lulling groove harkens back to Mississippi Hill Country gospel music and gradually builds to a screaming modern keys solo and belting vocals. The band's last two albums from 2018 and 2019 have yielded a mature body of work with provoking lyricism and broad influences of funk, soul, blues, and rock. Cass' nondenominational approach and velvety vocal style are held together by a distinctly lyric-centric thread. The band's 2019 album, Play Nice, was #1 in the U.S. on the National R&B Chart for 11 weeks in 2019/20 (Roots Music Report).

“In ‘We’re All Going Down’ I’m broaching a tough subject, and I have some concerns about the backlash. I don’t ever write something to be controversial, but it seems like I find interest in things that we’re not supposed to talk about. I wanted to write a song about false authority, because it’s a huge issue in the world. I have this huge part of me that won’t go along with the status quo, so this is close to home for me. But the song is also about taking a hard look at our own dark side and not hiding from it."

“I grew up going to my grandma’s Baptist church every week, but my dad would have nothing to do with it. It was a hellfire and brimstone kind of message each week, and Dad was a partier and exactly what the church preached against. But ironically, even though he was an alcoholic, he’s still one of the most ethical people I’ve ever met and has a huge, loving heart. The judgment the church dished out has always been under my skin, so this song got it out once and for all!"

Cass is currently based in Denver, Colorado and tours regionally and nationally. In preparation for the release of a third full-length album, CCB is sharing it's newest single, "We're All Going Down."

Mandy Storm

Here is Mandy Storm with her third single ‘Run' The 35-year-old Mandy Storm has been working on music for as long as she can remember. In elementary school she didn't skip a talent show or musical and loved it to be in the spotlight. Music was also an important thing in high school, she completed her final exam in music with a 9. She gained experience in singing with guest appearances with J&J two men Company. She took a number of singing lessons at Marion van Iwaarden. Solo she works on her own music and lyrics.

About 7 years ago Mandy Storm started writing her own lyrics. After writing a lyric, she picks up her ukulele to make a melody. Her head is turning wild with lots of creative ideas. All her lyrics are based on events from her own life. You could say Mandy is giving you a peek into her diary. This also applies to this song Run. It is about having the strength to come out of a period of darkness. Never give up is her motto, and she wants to encourage people who are having bad times, to listen to your inner voice and knowing that after bad times, there will come good times. Mandy really likes music from the '50s, '60s and '70s. You can also hear that in her own music. She likes to put some old sounds in new music. She hopes that people will enjoy listening her new single. One thing is very clear, this song will not be the last one that we hear from her!

The Frst

After sharing stages with acts like Florida Georgia Line, Portugal. The Man and Sublime With Rome, from venues all over like The Grand Ole Opry to the Vans Warped Tour stages, The Frst founder Mikei Gray was looking to fill the gap between his spectrum of experiences and focused on forging a project that encompassed hard rock riffs and meaningful songwriting.

In 2017, Gray founded The Frst, intentionally leaving out the I, due to the band’s changing nature and revolving lineup. Since the formation, Gray has elicited the support of featured artists like Nathan Cogan of Taking Back Sunday along with Andrew Leahey (Thirty Tigers), Jeff Hutchins of Insane Clown Posse, Justin Smith of Rodney Atkins, Eric Barfield (Evans Blue) and others to realize his ideas for their debut album Prelude, pegged by the single "Ammo" which peaked at No. 1 on Soundcloud Rock Charts and and “Tarantino” which also climbed to No.1 on US FM Radio (KXFM) and No. 78 on iTunes Top 100 Rock Songs Chart.

Subsequent albums like 2020 Record Store Day special 'Bees' and recent singles like "Small Talk" and "This is me Now (feat. Kid Brunswick) were equally as successful and paved the way for Gray to continue down his experimental creative path that boasts the meaning of songwriting and collaboration while blurring the line between genres.

John & Nienke

What happens when a song stays with you all the time and you can’t get it out of your head…

It happened to John with the beautifull song “What do I know” written by Steven McClintock. So we dicided that we take the song into our studio, made our own version of it… so we did.

The song developed as we were working on it and we decided to make two versions. One version featuring Mark Lennon (from the band Venice) and the other version as a love duet between John & Nienke.

Destiny Band Oz

Destiny Band Oz is a multi-award winning duo comprising husband and wife singer-songwriters, Thomas and Tessa Libreri.

Their versatile music and vocal styles range from soulful ballads to pumpy, country rock; ('Country, Rock and Soul!) They have already released 3 albums and 2 EPs and are excited to have just released their new album of original songs with new producer, Damian Cafarella of EOR Studios called 'Who I Might Be'.

As children, Thomas and Tessa grew up in the suburbs of Melbourne, Australia. Thomas in Reservoir and Tessa in Kilsyth. They were both musically inclined and tutored in music and singing. Thomas formed his first band at 12 playing bass guitar and had singing lessons from Normie Rowe.  He played in many bands over the years. Tessa performed in musicals, went to the Johnny Young Talent School and was classically trained by Suzanne Steele then with Audrey Duggan.

Thomas and Tessa met in a line-dancing country band based in Kinglake in 1996 which seemed like 'destiny' and they soon branched out on their own as a duo and later with various full band line-ups performing at clubs and functions. They married, had children and settled in Kinglake. They didn't perform much whilst their children were very young and then the horrific Black Saturday bushfires struck. Thomas and Tessa fought and saved their home and family and some of their neighbours but not all - and in the aftermath they decided to move their family away to Gippsland for a new start. (Thomas received a 'BM' - Bravery Medal from the Governor-General of Australia for his actions in saving a neighbour after the fire who sadly died a few weeks later in hospital) both Thomas and Tessa were heavily involved in the relief and rebuilding effort personally and through their building business at the time.

After moving to Gippsland, they devoted themselves to the activities of their primary school aged daughters, joined community groups and clubs in the area and soon found themselves performing full-on again. They decided to record an album of their original songs written over the years because of their life-changing experience and knowing how fragile life is, so it was more for posterity than anything but they were encouraged by local radio hosts who'd heard them perform their songs to release a song to radio, which they did in 2017.

Since then, they've had amazing #1 and Top 10 chart successes for their music and have amassed over a dozen major Australian and International awards.

Elisabeth Hope

Elisabeth Boersema (nickname Esther) or Elisabeth Hope is originally from Groningen and has lived in Drenthe for twenty years. Currently in Klazienaveen. "I do feel like a Drent yes," said the singer. During the week she is in a hair salon on Erica, but singing is really her great love.
The naturalness with which she is now singing in front of an audience was not there a few years ago.

"In the background I had been working on music for a long time, I've had singing lessons for years, but I never really dared to do anything with it," says Esther. "It was always my silent wish."
Through others, Esther came into contact with people who managed to convince her to make music for the public after all. It eventually came to a performance. Esther was sold. “I loved it so much,” she says. "My greatest wish, a song of my own, came so close."

She recorded her first song at Neo Music in Bovensmilde. There are now four singles from her to listen to. "You know, you age happily and I think you're never too old to learn something. So I thought, if I want something, I'll have to do it anyway. I shouldn't be such a shit and I just have to to do."

Tammy Marler

Growing up in Santa Cruz, California until 15, she learned to love artists like Bonnie Raitt, The Beach Boys, The Eagles and Fleetwood Mac – and they would shape the kind of country she would eventually write.

The move to Texas in the second half of her freshman year to San Antonio is where she fell in love with artists like Merle Haggard, George Strait and The Judds. Their influences would be the finishing touches that would shape Tammy into the writer she is today.

Her own songwriting got started when her oldest son started taking guitar lessons.  A spark was lit as she watched his talent grow. She knew all those bottled up lyrics put on a shelf as she raised 6 kids would finally come to life!

His guitar teacher, Scotty Raye, asked her to sing on his demos that would be going to Nashville. It was then the flame started to burn.

She would form a band shortly after and thought that would be enough. She could just sing locally and share her songs while covering her favorite artists!  Now with youngest son Tadd at her side on rhythm lead guitar, she would begin to write her masterpieces.

It was at a songwriting showcase in 2016 she would meet the first of her songwriting family, Colleen Francis. Colleen's love for Pop music and Rap and Tammy's love for Classic Rock and Country created a unique sound that caught the ears of many. Over those first few years, that songwriting family grew to 20-plus strong. Filled with artists like Billie Jo, Bailey Rae, Sophie Lynn, Mackenzie O'Brien, Andrew Chipman, Derek Skelton, Caitlin Caporale, Hunter Jordan, Daniel Sampley, Savvy Poole and the list goes on.

She has also been joined by so many other writers to compose great songs that are now being pitched in Nashville!   Many of her songs have been recorded and released by other artists as well!  Still waiting on that big one to hit, she is happy to just be a part of the journey in the lives of other writers.

So stay awhile and listen to the many songs written or co-written by Tammy Marler.

Randie O'Neil

Randie O'Neil's storytelling comes from a sincere place. Her work as an adolescent intervention specialist brings a real-world perspective to her lyrics. Drawing on her own life story of having to survive an abusive alcoholic environment as a child, she helps students navigate a complicated world. Through her songs, she conveys a message of understanding and courage to face problems that almost all of us experience at some point in our lives.

Full Moon Rising really explores finding your way through tough times and explores relationships during those tough times.  During the dark times of  Covid 19, Randie found a way to stay connected to her friends and community.  She found a way to explore and expand and even inspire.  Full Moon Rising deals with being cooped up and isolated but determined to stay connected to those who matter most. She felt like every day was full moon and Randie was restless to go out and be able to explore.  She used that energy to write.  “Queen (of the Barstool Two-Step)” examined the nightlife that had changed during covid.  Going to bars was not an option for people and what do you do with the loneliness.  People go out to be with people and not feel so alone.  Some people were brought together during this time and others found a distance between them. “Whispers takes a look at people who were together yet not able to quiet connect.”  “Treat me Right is an infectious  song with a lot of sass that just lays it out what a girl wants from a relationship.”  “Sidewalks” is a catchy singalong.  What Randie missed most was her ability to go out and meet people, to follow the sidewalks to where she wanted to go.  “Daddy’s Pride” is a powerful song that explores her relationship with her abusive alcoholic stepfather.  A parent should nurture and instill pride in a child, Randie was able to find it on her own.

Caroline Parke

" I wrote my first song in 2008, and have been jotting down lines in spurts and starts ever since. Most of the time I use real life experiences, using songwriting to revive all sorts of emotions. There are also songs where I completely make up the entire story line, allowing myself to just let go and dream for an afternoon! (Its a Great Escape!)

I am quite isolated on a farm in the middle of cattle country in western Canada. My daily interactions are with my husband and four young children, and my husband`s parents. Thank goodness for the internet, to allow for more visiting! I am always busy with cooking and cleaning and laundry and have a big garden each summer, preserving much of our food, and cooking (almost) every meal from scratch (if you need a recipe, just ask!).

It`s difficult to find any stretch of time to concentrate, but as my friend Tammy says, you can`t get diamonds without pressure. While I am sometimes overwhelmed with simple daily tasks, I find that my mind can often find a glimmer of a small crack, and squeezes out something refreshing, creative, and beautiful, through words and melody."

Northeast Music Festival

The countdown is on; North by Northeast Music Festival (NXNE) has announced its initial list of Showcasing Artists invited to perform at this year’s music festival June 14th - 19th in Toronto.

The annual cultural explosion featuring music and more is set to feature over 300+ of the world’s best artists of today and tomorrow — including Omega Mighty, Osé, Balto, Dallas, Broken Islands, Vicky R, Jeremy Voltz, and hundreds more!

“We’re back and taking over more than 20 of Toronto’s top live music venues,” NXNE Founder and President Michael Hollett reveals. “We want to make it very easy for people to come back to live music and experience stage-hopping like festivals used to be.”

The festival is committed to gender equity and BIPOC representation, boasting a diverse lineup that reflects the festival’s core theme, ‘Talent is Everywhere.’ NXNE also makes great music accessible and inclusive to all; no artists are asked to pay to apply, all performers are paid, and admission to Club Shows in 2022 is extremely low-cost.

Full festival five-day passes are just $20 — an inflation-defying $9.99 less than in 1995 when NXNE launched. “That’s actually cheaper than when it first started,” Hollett notes. “Given the pummeling the live music scene has taken over the last two years, we wanted to remove financial barriers to attending NXNE to best connect artists with audiences. You can see live music all week for the price of a movie ticket and popcorn.

“We can’t wait to present these great acts to the world,” Hollett continues. “It’s time to experience live music again – and listen to the future at NXNE.”

While further announcements of NXNE’s full lineup will follow, passes are currently available for sale at nxne.com.
