Woody Allen and jazz

Woody Allen is a passionate fan of jazz, he began playing clarinet as a child and took his stage name from clarinetist Woody Herman. He has performed publicly at least since the late 1960s, including with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band on the soundtrack of Sleeper.

Woody Allen and his New Orleans Jazz Band have been playing each Monday evening at the Carlyle Hotel in Manhattan for many yearspecializing in New Orleans jazz from the early 20th century. He plays songs by Sidney Bechet, George Lewis, Johnny Dodds, Jimmie Noone, and Louis Armstrong. The documentary film Wild Man Blues (directed by Barbara Kopple) chronicles a 1996 European tour by Allen and his band, as well as his relationship with Previn. The band released the albums The Bunk Project (1993) and the soundtrack of Wild Man Blues (1997). In 2005, Allen, Eddy Davis and Conal Fowkes released the trio album Woody With Strings. In a 2011 review of a concert by Allen's jazz band, critic Kirk Silsbee of the Los Angeles Times suggested that Allen should be regarded a competent musical hobbyist with a sincere appreciation for early jazz: "Allen's clarinet won't make anyone forget Sidney Bechet, Barney Bigard or Evan Christopher. His piping tone and strings of staccato notes can't approximate melodic or lyrical phrasing. Still his earnestness and the obvious regard he has for traditional jazz counts for something."

Allen and his band played at the Montreal International Jazz Festival on two consecutive nights in June 2008. For many years he wanted to make a film about the origins of jazz in New Orleans. Tentatively titled American Blues, the film would follow the different careers of Louis Armstrong and Sidney Bechet.

TAPE FIVE

TAPE FIVE, the multinational music project has, since 2004, produced 8 albums and many EPs and singles. They generate millions of streams across the usual platforms and have shared the stage with some of the great pop and jazz artists around the world even playing for presidents! Tape Five’s songs are heard in adverts, TV and film and appear on more than a 1000 compilations worldwide.

In 2010 they became renowned as the “pioneers of Electroswing”. TAPE FIVE had already navigated their way through many facettes of vintage/retro music since the foundation in 2003 by master-mind Martin Strathausen (favorite quote: „I did it my way“). For almost a decade TAPE FIVE have thrived on a mixture of beats using the means of modern times, but song structures, stories, atmospheres, arrangements and live musicians are all inspired from days gone by, when enthusiasm for music boomed and musical individualism was paramount.

The Flying Beets

The Flying Beets, a Fort Worth-based indie rock trio, releases its highly anticipated debut single "Maybe Baby." Fronted by Nathan Waller, a popular DFW-based singer/songwriter known for his extraordinary vocal range and powerful delivery, the band is rounded by bass player David Cross and drummer Kenn Scott.

"Maybe Baby" bears witness to what happens when a power-punching rhythm section backs Waller's songwriting and guitar prowess. With a catchy hook and driving tempo, the band’s first release is a powerful anthem that is sure to find a home on many personal playlists.

Though The Flying Beets are a relatively new band, formed in the spring of 2022, their music showcases a maturity and depth that belies their short existence. "Maybe Baby" serves as a bold introduction to their collective talent and is destined to resonate with fans across multiple demographics.

Bryan Dallas

Bryan Dallas is more than a musician; he's a living testament to a life well-lived and a versatile artist. Born in San Francisco, CA, he grew up in the heart of the Bay Area's rock 'n' roll scene, setting the stage for his musical journey. But Bryan's story is anything but ordinary. His life is a patchwork of unique encounters and experiences:

At 18, Bryan danced backstage with Drew Barrymore and Karen O at The Beastie Boys concert.

He had an impromptu show with ZZ Top at age 23.

In pro per won against city police for a traffic ticket that turned into wrongful arrest.
Was in a hardcore band when EMO was a trend.

Became the first (and possibly only) crew member to check Chrissie Hynde’s microphone at The Fillmore SF.

Got kicked out of a church Choir for wearing blue suede shoes.

Beyond music, Bryan is a master mechanic, college radio programmer, and holds a Degree in day trading. He's an Anecdotalist, Epicure and has even left his mark on BURRN! Magazine, Japan.

Bryan's journey isn't just a musical one; it's a celebration of life's diverse experiences. He's an artist who defies conventions, always ready to follow his own unique path.

Maija

Maija (pronounced “Maya”) hails from London, England but lives in the Washington, DC area.

This year she releases her new single "Let’s Keep This a Secret". There are no perfect words to describe how personal this song has been to Maija. It is deeply emblazoned in her life’s work and relationships. Maija sings a lot of Brazilian jazz but tends to write music in her native language English.

Maija wrote the melody and lyrics to “Let’s Keep This a Secret” and her pianist, Wayne Wilentz, wrote the harmonic arrangement. Gerry Kunkel played guitar; Leonardo Lucini, bass; Mark Prince, drums. The song was recorded in 2023 at Bias Studio, Springfield, VA. Mike Monsieur mastered the final product.
